Bad breath is a strange condition. It’s one of the few examples of a symptom you don’t know you have, but everyone else certainly does. 

Bad breath comes from bacterial buildup in your mouth. Mostly, it comes from bacterial buildup on the tongue, but gum disease and rotting teeth can also cause the condition. 

There are several proven treatments for bad breath. Top of the list are mouth rinses and regular fluoride toothpaste. You’re often able to deal with the majority odor issues by simply following conventional oral hygiene practices.

You can also go to a dentist or gum specialist if your bad breath is a little more deep-seated. In some cases, you may need to replace teeth with dental crowns to prevent recurrent infections. You may also need to resolve deep pockets next to your teeth where bacteria can reside unaffected by either brushing or swishing.

Brush Your Tongue

Since the majority of bad breath bacteria reside on the tongue, it makes sense to brush it regularly to remove them. These days, you can get specialist tongue brushes that have rubbery bristles, or you can buy a toothbrush with a tongue scrubber on the reverse. Unlike your teeth, you don’t need to use a tongue brush for long: just a couple of scrapes will do the trick. 

Clean Your Dental Appliances

Your teeth and gums might be perfectly clean, but if your dental appliances are gunked up or caked in bacteria, then they will create a bad odor. 

The trick here is to brush them or leave them in dentist-approved cleaning solutions to prevent germs from multiplying. For instance, if you wear dentures, take them out at night and put them in a cleaning tray. 

Get A New Toothbrush Regularly

Toothbrushes lose their cleaning capacity over time. They start off working exceptionally well but, eventually, the bristles wear out and they need replacing. 

Make sure that you replace your brush at least once every three months. If you don’t, then you won’t be able to scrape away the bacteria every time that you clean your teeth. 

Don’t Put Yourself At Risk Of Dry Mouth

Dry mouth is a condition in which the mouth does not produce enough saliva from salivary glands. When this happens, it makes it easier for bacteria to build up, since the saliva cannot wash them away. 

To prevent dry mouth, don’t smoke. Also, drink plenty of water and avoid drinking too much coffee. 

Change Your Diet

Sometimes, diet can be the source of bad breath, particularly vegetables in the allium family, including onion and garlic. You might also want to cut down on the amount of sugar and bakery goods that you eat, as these can foster the growth of germs in your mouth over time. Instead, stick with whole foods, as they come from nature. When you do this, you’ll notice that your mouth and the rest of your body gets healthier and you will be able to stop bad breath.
