How to Tackle Moving Day Without Stress

Buying a house or moving to a new area is always stressful, there’s no way to completely eliminate it. However, you can lighten the load by planning well and making sure that you’re prepared for moving day.

Here are some tips to help everything go smoothly, so you can make yourself at home as soon as possible.

How to Tackle Moving Day Without Stress

Packing Preparations

It’s been said that when you fail to plan, you plan to fail. That principle applies to plenty of situations, including your moving day. If you leave everything to the last minute, then your moving day is likely to transition into a moving week. There’s simply too much to do in one day.

Even if you manage to get everything done in a day or two, you will be rushed and stressed. Accidents are more likely to happen and the job will be much harder than it needs to be.

However, if you plan ahead and start packing and clearing your house out in advance, then you can be more relaxed and productive. Moving can be a great opportunity to get rid of clutter, and you might as well do it now and make unpacking easier for yourself.

Get the right packing and moving supplies so you can ensure that your belongings are as safe and secure as possible. Pack the things you don’t need in advance. Some people essentially pack everything they can live without for a week or two, so the moving day is much simpler.

When packing, work room by room and label your boxes. This means that, when it’s time to unpack, all your boxes are in the right place. Think of it as doing a favor for your future self. Use packing materials like newspapers to keep breakable items safer, and don’t overload your boxes so that they’re too heavy to lift. You should use packing tape to seal and secure the boxes. You can even use it to reinforce the corners of the box.

Children and Pets

Older children can be helpful on the moving day, and it’s usually a good idea to get them involved so they don’t feel locked out of the loop. However, younger children and pets might find the whole experience far more difficult and stressful to deal with. Not only this, but it can be unsafe to have them running around, and you will be forced to divert your attention from packing.

It’s a better and safer idea to have someone look after your children or pets in a different location. Daycare is a good option, especially if you don’t have any willing friends or family who are able to babysit or dogsit for the day.

Self Storage Options

If you can’t move into your new home right away, either due to renovations or your moving day simply does match up with when you have to vacate your current home, then you may have to stay somewhere else.

This might be cheap rented accommodation, or someone’s house for a few days or weeks. In this case, you can keep your belongings in storage to keep them safe and out of the way. You can then move everything directly from storage to your new home.

Getting Help

One way to make sure your moving day goes smoothly is to get someone to help you. Friends and family are a good option, but make sure to show your appreciation with takeout or a drink on you. With a few friends and a hired van, you can move most things yourself.

However, a better option might be to hire a professional removal service. They can streamline the moving process and ensure that everything is delivered safely. While it costs money, it can save you hours of time and a lot of effort.

Settling In

Unfortunately, the work isn’t done once you’ve moved everything to your new home. You still have to unpack, clean up, and settle in. If you have any renovations to do, it might be best to get it done before you’ve settled in properly, so you can get it out of the way.

Once you’ve unpacked, then you can get to the more fun part. When you arrange your furniture and ornaments, you can see your house become a home. Start with the kitchen, so you have somewhere to cook and eat.

After that, get the essentials sorted, like the bathroom and the beds. Then you can work on communal areas like the living room so that you can relax as a family.
