Most of us have habits, they can often be really easy to fall into, but extremely hard to break. This isn’t a problem if your habits consist of plenty of exercise, a healthy, balanced diet, and drinking the recommended amount of water each day. However, for most people, habits are of a more unhealthy nature. We all know that some habits are bad for us. Unfortunately, that doesn’t make them any easier to break. This can place an extra layer of guilt on top of a habit that already makes you feel bad about yourself, creating a no-win situation. With the end of the year approaching fast, you may be keen to make some changes in your life ready for the new year. Focusing on eliminating bad habits is the perfect way to get the new year off to the best start. Quitting bad habits can be a challenge, as demonstrated by the stats that say 80% of people fail their New Year’s resolutions by February. However, the following tips should help to make breaking habits easier for you: Set Clear Goals Many people start out to quit a habit with a general idea of how they plan to give it up. However, unless you have a clear goal in mind and know precisely why you want to give up your habit, it can be challenging to succeed. Thinking carefully about the reasons for giving up your habit and what you will gain by doing so is really important. Having your ‘why’ written down and clear in your mind will help you to stay focused on what you are trying to achieve, which is an excellent motivator. Reduce Your Habit Gradually Taking an all-or-nothing approach often leads people to fail. Trying to simply quit something that you are addicted to, or have done for a long time can set you up for failure. When you attempt to do too much, too soon, all at once, you’re not giving yourself a fair chance of success. If your habit directly impacts your health, it’s best to speak to a medical professional for guidance before you try to break your habit. Taking steps to reduce your habit gradually may involve substituting your current habit with another one to help you slowly ease off. For example, many people start using disposable vapes when trying to quit smoking. Prepare for Success The final way to make quitting your unhealthy habits easier is to prepare for your success. Having everything you need ready and waiting for you when you get started with breaking your habit is essential. So, if you plan to give up junk food, making a meal plan of what you’re going to eat throughout the week, and shopping for all the ingredients in advance will help you to resist the temptation to order in a takeaway. Equipping yourself with everything you need before you get started will really increase your chances of beating your habit successfully and will help keep slip-ups at bay.
