Take up a new hobby
Many of us lead hectic lives and hobbies and interests fall by the wayside as a result. Having a hobby is not just a brilliant way to meet new people and forge friendships with adults with shared interests. It’s also a great way to relax, switch off and protect and nourish your mental health. If you tend to devote all your time to looking after your kids, running the home and working, now is the time to pick up a new hobby or make time in your schedule for activities that have taken a backseat. From baking, playing a musical instrument and swimming to hiking, painting and doing yoga, there are all kinds of options to explore.
Join a class or group
One of the easiest ways to meet new people if you’re new to the area or you’ve lost contact with friends over the years is to join a local class or group. Taking regular classes will enable you to enjoy activities at the same time as forming new relationships. Depending on your interests, you could start going to an art class or exercise sessions like dance, interval training or military boot camps or join a choir or music group. Look for details online.
Online communities
Many people find it difficult to engage with others face-to-face due to distance and a lack of time. At the moment, with the pandemic still very much at the forefront of our minds, safety can also be a barrier. Online communities provide a platform to expand your circle, meet people with similar interests and views and bridge physical gaps. If you’re passionate about something, you can look for social media groups to join or even think about setting up your own group using community software. Perhaps you’re an avid fan of a sports team or a band, you’re interested in getting to know people who want to talk about health and wellness, or you want to try and create a community of local mums and dads, for example. Communicating online is fast, easy and convenient and it can provide a real boost for people who struggle to socialise or find the time to meet new friends.
Social media
Social media apps offer incredible benefits for users who are looking to stay in contact with friends and family, reconnect with former colleagues or school friends and meet new people. You can use social media to catch up with people you already know as well as to find groups of people who have the same interests and people who live in your town, village or county. Neighbourhood groups are useful for accessing practical information, but they can also help you to become more sociable.
