Picking an engagement ring sounds straightforward – even fun – until you actually start looking, and then it turns into this slightly overwhelming mix of styles, shapes, advice, and opinions, and you’re left trying to work out what’s important and what really doesn’t matter at all. 

The fact is, there’s a big difference between choosing something that looks good in a box and choosing something that’s going to be worn every day without any problems, and with that in mind, here are some things you need to know when picking an engagement ring.

Start With The Person, Not The Ring

It’s easy to begin with the ring itself, scrolling through options, comparing styles, trying to narrow things down, and so on, but all that does is make things more difficult because what tends to work better is to think about the person first and everything else after that. 

Ask yourself what they usually wear, what do they avoid, what feels natural to them, and other similar questions, and you’ll already be a lot further ahead in your search than you would have been if you’d only focused on the ring itself. 

The Details Are Important 

At first glance, a lot of rings can look quite similar, especially online, but the smaller details are what change the overall feel of the thing, so those are what you need to really be focusing on when you’re choosing. 

Those details are going to include the setting, the band, how the stone sits, and so on, and those are the things that make one ring feel quite different from another, even if they look similar at a distance. 

Shape Changes The Whole Look

The shape of the stone does more than people expect because it actually changes the entire look of the ring rather than just the centrepiece. 

A lab-grown radiant baguette ring, for example, is a lot more structured and defined, and it’s something a bit sharper and more distinctive compared to more rounded shapes. And of course, in general one stone shape isn’t better than any other, so it’s going to come down to personal preference as we mentioned at the start. 

Think About How It Will Be Worn

It’s not just about how the ring looks when it’s brand new that matters massively – it’s also got to work for the wearer’s life and be practical as well as pretty. 

So will it feel comfortable? Will it sit alongside other jewellery? Will it feel still right a few months down the line? What about work – will it be okay wherever they work? Those things are much more important than almost anything else, because if it’s not right, they’re not going to wear it, so it’ll be a waste of potentially quite a lot of money. 

You Don’t Need To Understand The Technical Side 

There’s always a lot of information about engagement rings, and it’s easy to feel like you have to understand every piece of it before making a decision. But the truth is that most of those details are only there to guide you, not overwhelm you, and not knowing something really isn’t the end of the world. 

Once you’ve got a basic understanding of what you want and what you’re looking for, that’s usually enough to ensure you pick something that’s going to be just right.
